(Heavily based on Matthew Garrett's Signing up to NTLWorld under Linux)
For this you need Socketeer and a browser supporting SSL. Of those that I've tried, Browse doesn't work, but Oregano (including the demo version) does. This assumes both are installed and working happily. You also must have an NTLWorld CD, as the CD sleeve contains ID numbers specific to your account. Request one from NTL if you want to signup.
- Run Socketeer, go to Setup->Connection, and Add a new connection, call it ntlsignup.
- In Modem, set Server type to PPP (PAP), the Phone number to 0800 5190150 (BT users might need 1263 0800 5190150). Set the serial port settings to suit your machine and modem.
- In Your account, set Login name to p1autoreg (that's p-one-autoreg), and password to 6661066 (that's a one not an L again).
- In TCP/IP, set Gateway to 127.0.0.1, DNS servers to 194.168.4.100 194.168.8.100 and Local domain to ntlworld.com
- Save the above, and connect to ntlsignup. You should now be on the NTL network, but can only access machines required for the signup.
- In your browser, go to https://62.253.162.131/cgi/candy and follow the signup instructions. You'll need the ID numbers from your CD and your account number (from a recent bill). Once it has finished, it will tell you your username and password - at this point disconnect.
- In Socketeer, create a new connection called ntlworld. The
details should be the same as above, except:
- Phone number is 0800 5190100 (or maybe 1263 0800 5190100 for BT users)
- Login name and password are as given by the setup web pages.
- Set 194.168.4.100 as the gateway. (Technically this isn't actually used as the gateway by Socketeer, it's just used as a place to ping to see if the connection is up.)
- That's it. The SMTP server is smtp.ntlworld.com, the POP3 server is pop.ntlworld.com and the news (NNTP) server is news.ntlworld.com, which can used to set up your applications software.
If all that lot's too much like hard work, you can download my signup and normal login profiles for Socketeer. They work on my machine (connecting via an NTL phone line in Cambridge), but your mileage may vary!
Update
11 June 2003
The above instructions date from around 1999 so might be slightly out of date by now. However Justin Fletcher says there's a new number to signup which should be used in preference to the old one:
I don't know if the signup has changed - I doubt it - but there's a new number that can be used in place of the one you have listed.
It is intended that the new number be the primary and the old one the backup.
1470 0808 990 9877
It's important that the 1263 NOT be included preceeding this (o inserted, or otherwise included) as they now use the caller ID info to work out who you are.
I no longer have an NTL line so am unable to try this, but you might find it useful.
