GUIDANCE NOTES

THE LIST

The listed programs have all been tested and appear to run with no problems
on the Acorn PC Emulator. You must be aware, however, that to fully test a
package can take months, and testing to this degree is just not feasible. You
should note that some of the packages listed require the use of a hard disc.

You are advised when obtaining any software package for use with the
emulator, that you should get it on a trial basis, or on the understanding
that if it does not work satisfactorily with the emulator, you can return it
to the dealer for a full refund.

The list is not exhaustive, so if you have successfully run any software
under the Acorn PC Emulator which has not been included, please let me know.
Omission from the list does not necessarily mean that the package doesn't run
- only that it has not been tested!

INSTALLING SOFTWARE

Some software packages need to know what kind of machine they are running
on, and you will be asked to confirm which hardware options your machine has
during the installation process. The following list is applicable to the PC
Emulator (PCe).

Generally, most software runs OK under the emulator. Programs which employ
copy protection (thankfully not so many these days) don't always work as
they try to access chips directly, However, with the copy protection removed
they usually work OK!

LIMITATIONS

The amount of memory available to MS-DOS when the emulator is being run on
an Archimedes 310, 410/1, or one megabyte A3000 system is about 600k, some
of which will be used by MS-DOS itself. Machines fitted with more than one
megabyte of RAM will provide the full 640k allowed under MS-DOS. The
emulator does not support extended memory.

The PC Emulator does not handle sound properly. Noises are produced, but
they usually bear no resemblance to what was intended. If possible, turn off
the sound.

The PC Emulator is able to run programs at about the same speed as the
original IBM PC, and most software runs at an acceptable speed. However, with
the increasing popularity of cheap 'turbo' PC's (which run software
quickly), and the users exposure to the Archimedes native mode (where most
things happen instantly!), the PC Emulator can appear to be a bit on the slow
side! (Patience is a virtue).

Note mouse driver is supplied with the PC Emulator. Software which makes use
of a mouse is usually supplied with a driver. The standard Microsoft mouse
driver only works when accessed by programs which make legal calls to the
mouse interrupt vector. Loading this driver in isolation will not allow the
mouse to be used as an alternative to the cursor keys!
